Holiday Gift Guide - Staff Picks

Lulu’s Holiday Gift Guide: Staff Picks

Our Gift Guide wouldn’t be complete if we didn’t include our personal favorites. These are the books that make us smile, that we keep a copy of on our desks, and that we recommend to friends while explaining to them what self-publishing is all about.

Get ready to get inspired. These are the books we love because they’re awesome, they’re memorable, and they remind us why we love being self-publishers. If you’ve got someone on your holiday list who love to read and you’re not sure what to get them, this list is for you.

From Fatherless to Fatherhood By Omar Epps

Author and world renowned actor Omar Epps chronicles his journey from humble beginnings in Brooklyn, New York, to the bright lights of Hollywood. Having grown up without his biological father, then becoming a father himself, Epps shares his story of pain and triumph in a uniquely visceral way. It’s an intimate, unapologetic, and emotional conversation about childhood, manhood, and parenting.

The Coffee Table Book of Rejected Coffee Table Books by Athol Birtley

The Coffee Table Book of Rejected Coffee Table Books By Athol Birtley

A book of rejected book ideas, in hardcover format. Author Athol Birtley submitted a new coffee table book proposal to publishers every fortnight for twelve months. All were rejected. He then submitted a coffee table book proposal for a compilation of rejected coffee table books. That too was rejected. But thanks to vanity publishing and the internet, his work is now available for the public to officially ignore.

Note: Unlike the Seinfeld episode, this book does not transform into a table.

Pub Rules of the Eighties By Rob Brown

Pub Rules of the Eighties is a joyfully shameless celebration of British humour, Eighties pop culture and swearing. Follow Chris, a young English bloke, as he navigates the perilous waters of life, love and crap jobs.

Note. Please be aware this book contains a lot of swearing. Adorable, charming, funny, sarcastic British swearing though, not harsh swearing. You know, the nice swearing.

If this book were a box of chocolates it would be a little bit nutty, a little bit fruity but mostly boozy.

Sanctuary Dogs By Konings

Sanctuary Dogs is a book of drawings of dogs from the Society for Abandoned Animals. The SAA is a small charity who care for and re-home unwanted dogs, cats and rabbits based in Manchester, UK. The project is a collaboration between the SAA and the artist Konings. The book illustrates the huge variety of dogs that, largely through no fault of their own, end up in rescue environments. We hope that we have managed to reflect the characters of the dogs in our drawings. Each dog is unique and we have fallen in love with every one of them. We hope that this book will inspire you to think about rescue and if you are in a position to give a dog a home to think about giving a rescue dog a second chance of a happy life.
