Lulu Junior Author of the Month - Everett Powell
We’re ringing in the new year with a great message from this month’s author, Everett Powell! In his story, “The Unhappy Eagle,” Everett urges us to be “thankful for what you can do and who you are and not to wish to be someone else.” Everett’s story was so good that he won first place for his age group in the Rainbow Resource Writing Contest that he entered!
Meet Eddy The Eagle
Everett’s story introduces us to a young eagle named Eddy who lives with his mom in the Rocky Mountains. Eddy’s mother frequently leaves the nest to hunt or stretch her legs, leaving Eddy quite bored and alone because he couldn’t fly yet. Stuck in the nest all day with nothing else to do, he began to observe what was going on around him. But, eventually, his constant boredom led to bitterness and impatience.
Eddy was starting to get so impatient, he instead began coming up with other animals and creatures that he could be. First, he chooses to be a wiggly and strong worm that he sees BUT out of nowhere a sparrow swoops down and grabs the worm with its beak! Eddy changes his mind and decides on a butterfly. Just as a butterfly was coming by, it tore its wing on a sharp branch. Eddy goes through a few animals, a bee, a dragonfly and a lizard...but let's just say they had a series of unfortunate encounters that left Eddy having to come up with other ideas.
We’ve reached the point of pure frustration; Eddy begins getting worked up and as he is talking to his mom he keeps telling himself, “I wanna be… I wanna be…! I WANNA BE…!” Eddy did not even realize in this moment of desperation that he was flapping his wings and making his way OUT of the nest! HE WAS FLYING! “He swooped, soared, dove, and glided and was as happy as can be, wild and free.” The moment had finally arrived where Eddy could leave his nest!
His mother asks him what he wants to be now, to which Eddy responds that “I just want to be...Me! Eddy the flying Eagle.” And what a good choice that was!
This is a wonderful, creative story with an inspiring message and we want to say a big thank you to Everett for letting us feature it this month. What a perfect way to start the new year!

My little 3-year-old sister. She was playing with a toy worm and singing" I wanna be a worm" over and over again!
Writing the part when Eddy the eagle started to fly. I felt so happy for him!
